I am thinking about doing some voluntary works to support my profile to pursuit my graduate education. Specifically, I intended to study a Master of Educational Psychology, as well as a scholarship for this program. Besides some other criteria, I am not sure which voluntary works or extracurricular activities I should do to boost my profile. SO I will provide you with some details about my background below for your preference:

  • I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Social Science at The University of Newcastle, Australia, majoring in Psychology. I finished one of six semesters of my program. Also, I aim to apply for a Master of Educational Psychology as soon as possible after my undergraduate.
  • I stem from Vietnam.
  • I have an excellent literature, writing, and public speaking background.
  • I was a member of a student-led literature team in my high school in Vietnam. Simultaneously, I still maintain a good connection with my high school teachers and the teacher who led this team.
  • I am interested in doing a podcast or a blog page to provide academic and scientific knowledge about psychology.
  • My dream specialisation is vocational and workplace teaching.
  • I participated in 2 voluntary trips before, one as a team member and the other as a leader. These two trips took place in a kindergarten school in a mountainous area in Vietnam. I still keep in contact with teachers there as well as the former leader.
  • I have experience in tutoring for students to prepare for the high school entrance exam in Vietnam.
  • My university has some ELICOS (kinda like teaching English for international students who do not have a good English background in English) positions that I can apply for.
  • This is the sharing of a student who successfully achieved a full scholarship in a graduate program at Deakin University about voluntary work: "Evidence of community-related work and research, such as volunteer or participation in extracurricular activities that allow the assessors to see your engagement in diverse research range."
  • I intended to start this graduate program in Australia.
  • Please be aware that every activity should be evidently demonstrated in my future application.

With your objective of bolstering your profile for a Master’s in Educational Psychology and a scholarship, it's important to align your extracurricular and volunteer experiences with the field of interest. The details you give a strong starting point for planning relevant activities. Here are several strategies and types of volunteer work that could potentially strengthen your profile:

  1. Educational Volunteering: Your past experience in tutoring and working with school children can be continued and expanded. Look for opportunities to volunteer at schools, after-school programs, or educational nonprofits in Australia. This might include assisting in settings, developing curriculum materials, or offering psychological support under supervision.

  2. Mentoring and Leadership: Take on roles that demonstrate leadership and mentoring, such as coordinating or leading educational programs, developing workshops, or training peers. The experience you've gained from previous leadership in voluntary trips would be impressively expanded upon here.

  3. Community Service Related to Psychology: Engage in community service activities that involve psychological support or wellbeing. This could be volunteering at mental health clinics, helplines, youth centers, or organizations supporting people with learning difficulties.

  4. Research Assistant: Look for opportunities at your current university to assist in psychology research. This demonstrates your commitment to the academically rigorous aspect of your chosen field.

  5. ** Societies and Psychology Clubs**: Being actively involved in, or even taking leadership roles within, relevant societies or clubs at your university will show with the field beyond your coursework.

  6. Podcast or Blog: Launching a podcast or blog on psychology topics, particularly educational psychology, can act as a strong to highlight your knowledge, communication skills, and enthusiasm for the subject. Aim to produce content that ties into educational psychology, such as discussing developmental stages, learning processes, or psychological well-being in educational settings.

  7. **ELICOS Tutor Taking up the ELICOS positions you mentioned would not only give you valuable teaching experience but also demonstrate your capacity to work international and diverse student groups, an increasingly important skill in educational psychology.

When documenting these activities for your scholarship and graduate application, consider the following:

  • Provide specific examples of your contributions and leadership experiences in your volunteer.
  • Offer tangible outcomes or impacts of your volunteer work, such as the success of an event you organized or improvements in students' performances you tutored.
  • Reflect on what you learned from each experience, tying it back to how it prepared you for advanced study in educational psychology.
  • Where possible, quantify your involvement (e.g., "Organized a series of 5 workshops attended by over 100 participants").
  • Keep in touch with individuals who can act as referees or provide testimonials of your work, preferably someone related to the field of psychology or education.
  • If applicable, outline any challenges you faced during your volunteer experiences and how you overcame them, showcasing problem-solving and resilience.
  • Consider maintaining a portfolio of your work, especially for your podcast or blog, which could be submitted as part of your application or showcased during.

Remember, each activity you engage in should serve a dual purpose; it should contribute meaningful value to the community or institution involved also further your personal and professional development within the field of educational psychology.
